Most of the information needed to complete the Communication Plan may be collected and written before the IEP meeting; however, there are a few sections that may need to be completed during the meeting, such as when there is a need for parent input and that has not been able to be obtained in advance, or when team members bring new data to the IEP meeting.
It is strongly recommended that the plan be discussed at the beginning of the meeting so that the team can consider the appropriate communication and language needs of the student. Since this documented information drives the development of the IEP each year, it is critical to discuss the student’s communication needs early in the IEP process.
