Assistive Technology

Assistive technology (AT) for students who are deaf/hard of hearing does not only consist of hearing assistive technology (HAT).

The term “assistive technology device” is defined in Rule 6A-6.03411(1)(b), Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), as “any item, piece of equipment or product system – whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized – that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a student with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted or the replacement of that device.” This definition mirrors the definition found in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) section 300.105 of Title 34, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
